Youth Justice Committee

The Youth Justice Committee is part of the Youth Diversion Program, which offers an opportunity for youth in conflict with the law to engage in restorative justice practices. These practices include restorative circles, facilitated dialogues, or other approaches guided by restorative principles.

The principles of a restorative practice are:

  • Victims’ needs are met
  • Young people take action to repair the harm they have caused
  • Community members have a role in the justice process
  • Everyone is guaranteed respect
  • Victims and offenders move forward peacefully

What Happens?

Those affected by an offence are invited to share their feelings and experiences with the young person who caused harm in a volunteer-facilitated conversation. They may attend a circle or dialogue in person, elect a representative to appear on their behalf, or provide an impact statement. As a result of hearing from those affected by their actions, young people often become more aware and accountable of their impact on their community.

Parents, family members, friends, and supporters of both parties are encouraged to attend. Everyone present has a voice in the success of the restorative process.

Who is Eligible?

The Youth Justice Committee serves young people between the ages of 12-17 who are in conflict with the law.
