The John Howard Society of Durham Region (JHS) is a non-profit, social service agency in Ontario Canada. We are dedicated to serving men and women, individuals and families, youth and adults with programs in areas such as counselling, employment, literacy, housing, parenting, addictions, and more.  Most of our services are free.

June 23, 2017 - Three Whig-Standard articles in recent days have described members of our community experiencing mental health and addiction crises as “being annoying,” performing “bizarre actions” and “tying up police and paramedics on wild goose chases.” Such judgmental and insensitive language is used to characterize individuals who are not only suffering serious illnesses but appearing in a court of law: paying debts to society for actions taken as a result of their precarious health and life circumstances.…Read More
