June 21, 2025 - JHS partnered in October 2014 with United Way to meet a need in our community to improve services/referrals to those people living in the downtown area, toward employment, schooling, and support services. The Options Navigator position works primarily on the Community Wellness Bus, a mobile service that assists individuals with a multitude of supports such as housing, harm reduction, and medical care. June 21, 2025 - This program was developed as an expansion of our Options Program on a fee-for-service basis. Since 1985, we’ve offered essential skills to individuals and groups who could benefit from greater communication and problem-solving skills. We recognized their value for those in the workplace or in pre-employment. An Individual workshop or a combination of workshops can be presented based on identified needs and goals. June 21, 2025 - Having a criminal record can be a significant barrier to an individual’s ability to obtain employment, education, and housing. John Howard Society has been assisting people to complete Record Suspension applications since 2006 on a fee-for-service basis. A Record Suspension Specialist will guide individuals through the eligibility requirements and application process. JHS provides ongoing support to ensure all required documentation is gathered and conditions are met before submitting their application to the Parole Board of Canada. June 21, 2025 - Restorative Approach practices have been proven to be a valuable tool in reducing conflict and repairing harm across a diversity of groups and situations. These practices can have a positive effect in reducing the frequency and the severity of individuals becoming justice-involved while reducing costs and processing time. It is a process that invites all parties involved and affected by the conflict. The harmed and the harmer willingly participate in a conversation or circle, with the goal of repairing harm, and having each party feeling heard and validated. June 21, 2025 - This program provides daily on-site support to the shelter residents to reduce emergency shelter living, and increase the likelihood of long-term housing retention. Staff also assist individuals/families in housing crises to access resources within the community that can assist them in managing their tenancy, and broker additional long-term support through external referrals as required. June 21, 2025 - This program serves all people, ages 16 and up, accused of criminal offences and required to attend bail court. It provides information to the courts to speed up the court process. For those who qualify for bail, without the resources or support to meet bail conditions, we also offer supervision to those released while awaiting trial. Eligibility is determined by the JHS Court Worker. The program supports the reduction of delays in criminal court and represents a cost-effective alternative to remand in jail, by enabling the release of accused individuals. June 21, 2025 - Low-risk youth 12 to 17 years old (referred by police) who have committed an offence are referred by City Police. After discussing the incident with a counsellor, the youth chooses an appropriate meaningful consequence and within a few weeks reports and verifies its completion. If the youth shows signs of being at higher risk of re-offending, referrals are made to appropriate community resources.
