Direct Service
June 21, 2025 - Since its inception in 1960, JHS has been offering this core service. It is open to individuals who are or who have been in conflict with the law. Support is also available to family members, friends and loved ones who have been impacted by their loved one’s criminal justice system involvement. This program is offered on site at the JHS office (Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4:30 pm and some evenings) and provides support and counselling services. Anger Management Program
June 21, 2025 - The men’s anger management programs is 12 sessions in length and offered on site at the JHS. The programs are open to anyone needing assistance to learn how to control their anger response. The main goal of the program is the prevention of violence. Fees for the program are based on a sliding scale and are in accordance with what one can afford. All participants complete an intake assessment and additional counselling is available for those who request it. Transportation assistance is available and light refreshments are sometimes available. Restorative Justice Practices
June 21, 2025 - Restorative Approach practices have been proven to be a valuable tool in reducing conflict and repairing harm across a diversity of groups and situations. These practices can have a positive effect in reducing the frequency and the severity of individuals becoming justice-involved while reducing costs and processing time. It is a process that invites all parties involved and affected by the conflict. Options Navigator
June 21, 2025 - JHS partnered in October 2014 with United Way to meet a need in our community to improve services/referrals to those people living in the downtown area, toward employment, schooling, and support services. The Options Navigator position works primarily on the Community Wellness Bus, a mobile service that assists individuals with a multitude of supports such as housing, harm reduction, and medical care. The Options Navigator reaches residents in the area through walkabouts and speaking to residents about their needs to enable them to gain further skills toward employment/schooling and meeting basic needs. Paths to Greater Success
June 21, 2025 - This program was developed as an expansion of our Options Program on a fee-for-service basis. Since 1985, we’ve offered essential skills to individuals and groups who could benefit from greater communication and problem-solving skills. We recognized their value for those in the workplace or in pre-employment. An Individual workshop or a combination of workshops can be presented based on identified needs and goals. Record Suspensions / Pardon
June 21, 2025 - Having a criminal record can be a significant barrier to an individual’s ability to obtain employment, education, and housing. John Howard Society has been assisting people to complete Record Suspension applications since 2006 on a fee-for-service basis. A Record Suspension Specialist will guide individuals through the eligibility requirements and application process. JHS provides ongoing support to ensure all required documentation is gathered and conditions are met before submitting their application to the Parole Board of Canada.
