Justice Services

Justice Services

We offer a variety of programs designed to support individuals who are involved in the criminal justice system. Our programs are aimed at providing alternatives to prosecution, encouraging accountability, and helping individuals make positive changes in their lives. Whether an individual is seeking a diversion program or assistance with a record suspension, our services are here to help.

Community Service Order

Our program offers an alternative sentencing option for individuals over 18 charged with non-violent offenses and who are court-ordered to complete community service hours. Program participants engage in meaningful work with local non-profit organizations and gain valuable skills while fulfilling their court obligations. Our team may approve alternative community-based projects and provide referrals for short-term counselling in support of completing successful placements. Funded by the Ministry of Solicitor General, the program helps individuals repair harm while contributing positively to their community.

Record Suspension Program (formerly Pardons)

Our program supports individuals applying for Record Suspensions, navigate the process, complete the applications, and ensure access to the right information. A Record Suspension (formerly called a Pardon) is an order that keeps a person’s criminal record (of convictions) separate and apart from other criminal records. This means a person’s convictions will not be disclosed in criminal checks. It does not erase a criminal record. Record suspensions allow people who have made positive life changes to be freed from the many negative impacts of having a criminal record. People have the right not to be discriminated against because of a criminal conviction for which they have received a record suspension.

Eligibility

You may apply for a Record Suspension if:

  • You were convicted of an offense in Canada under a federal act or regulation, were convicted of a crime in another country and transferred to Canada.
  • You have completed your sentence, including fines, restitution, probation, and parole.
  • You have met the required wait time based on the date of your offense.

John School

Our John School program is a court-approved diversion program offered as an alternative to criminal charges for individuals arrested for soliciting sexual services or related offenses. This one-day, 8-hour educational program helps participants understand the serious impact of their actions.

During the session, participants learn about the realities of sex work, including how it can involve exploitation, trafficking, and abuse. The program highlights the effects on sex workers, families, and communities, and explains the legal and personal consequences of solicitation.

Participants hear from survivors, law enforcement, and health professionals, gaining insight into the broader issues behind the sex trade. The goal is to encourage reflection, build empathy, and help individuals make more informed and responsible choices moving forward.

Upon successful completion, the charge is typically withdrawn, giving participants the opportunity to avoid a criminal record.

Direct Accountability Pre and Post Diversion Program

Pre-Charge Diversion:

Our Pre-Charge Diversion program offers an alternative to formal court proceedings for individuals 18 years or older who have committed minor criminal offenses. By participating in this community-based sentencing option, individuals can avoid the criminal justice system while still being held accountable for their actions. This program accepts referrals from Durham Regional Police Services.

Post-Charge Diversion:

Our program is designed as an alternative to prosecution for individuals 18 years or older who have been charged with minor criminal offenses. Eligible individuals are assessed by a Community Justice Worker to determine if they are appropriate candidates for the program, which offers a community-based alternative to traditional court proceedings. Referrals are made by the Crown.
