Our Employment and Training Services offer a range of comprehensive support for youth and adult job seekers and employers to ensure successful employment outcomes and job retention. Our services can be tailored to meet your specific needs.

Employment Ontario Services

We help clients get job ready and help employers find the best candidates, and support employers long term to help with job retention. Our programs can be tailored to individual or organizational needs.

For Employers

We have free services to support HR and training. These services can be tailored to fit individual or organizational needs:

  • Help with hiring and filling vacancies (job board, marketing, advertising and job fairs)
  • Job matching and placement services: assistance with candidate screening
  • Information on training incentives and wage subsidy supports
  • Certificate training (Smart Serve, Food Safety) for existing and potential staff
  • Talk to our Job Developers about your business’s eligibility for support

Employability Skills

Free programming includes:

  • Build financial literacy and workplace skills
  • Foundational skills building for adults who wish to improve their competencies in preparation for employment, independence, apprenticeship, secondary, post-secondary goals
  • Customized plans centred around individual training goals and current skill levels
  • Small group setting
  • Year-round intake and assessment with flexible scheduling options

Learning Alternatives Program

Improve your reading, writing, math, and computer skills. This program is for adults working towards employment, independence, apprenticeship, secondary or post-secondary education

  • Adults 18+ who are not in school
  • Individuals with a specific goal in one of these five goal paths: Employment, Apprenticeship, Secondary Education, Post-Secondary Education, or Independence
  • Free, non-credit upgrading for adults with 1:1 instruction in a small group setting
  • 1:1 support to identify and fill in skills gaps
  • Flexible schedules and individualized learning plans
  • Access and referrals to other John Howard Society programs and services for long-term support
  • Classes Monday to Thursday
  • 8:30am – 3:00pm (half days possible)

STEP Program — Skills Training for Employment and Post-Secondary

  • Youth 15 – 30 who are not in school or employed
  • Up to 12 paid weeks including up to 4 weeks of employment services and/or skills training, followed by 8 weeks of competitive-quality employment opportunity or support for post secondary
  • Earn certifications such as Smart Serve, WHMIS, Basic Food Safety Training, Working at Heights, First Aid and C.P.R.
  • Financial support is available
  • Referrals to other John Howard Society programs and services for long-term support, staying connected with counsellors
