Skills Development Department – Literacy and Basic Skills

Literacy & Basic Skills

Literacy & Basic Skills is a community-based program that provides free education and training for adults. Upgrading includes skill building for reading, writing, numeracy, digital technology, self-management, as well as essential skills necessary for the workplace. Funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, training and skills development, the program is designed to support learners on one of the following goal paths: Employment, Apprenticeship, Post-Secondary Education, High School credits or independence. Through personally designed programming, based on individual needs, we can help support you to overcome your challenges and achieve success.

Skill Development (Employment Program)

Our Skill Development team is committed to supporting individuals throughout their journey to long-term employment. We work hard to meet you where you are at and create individualized plans to help you succeed. We provide an open, inclusive and safe environment for you to share your story and be heard. Through individual sessions, group workshops and confidence building exercises, we can support you in recognizing your true potential and value as an employee. Whether you are contemplating change, want to further develop your skills or are actively looking for work, we welcome you to come and experience the wrap around services the John Howard Society provides.
