Locked Up. Locked Out.
Locked Up. Locked Out. The Revolving Door of Homelessness and Ontario’s Justice System report aims to demonstrates how justice system involvement is a leading cause – and result – of housing loss in Ontario. Drawing from data gathered from 175 individuals with experience of homelessness and justice involvement, JHSO researchers found that 41% of survey participants reported that their most recent experience of housing loss had been caused by justice involvement. The findings paint a clear picture of the cyclical nature of jail, homelessness, and re-incarceration, and concludes that in order to address the growing crisis of homelessness in communities across the province, there needs to be investment in dedicated housing options for those exiting the justice system and increased investment in community-based organizations supporting reintegration and systems navigation.
