The John Howard Society of Peterborough delivers a continuum of programs and services, from primary preventative workshops, to psycho educational programs. These workshops or groups are self-referral and/or part of an Extrajudicial Measure or Sanction contract. Referrals are made by agencies, schools, parents, police, and some receive referrals directly from the courts. During these workshops and groups, youth aged 12-17 years learn effective ways to deal with conflicts and develop positive thinking, effective communication and problem solving skills.
RE-THINK, ANGER MANAGEMENT GROUP
Over 8 weekly sessions, participants will learn about their anger cues and explore a range of strategies proven to help young men take control of their anger. To enroll, youth must first attend an intake accompanied by a parent or guardian. (Males only)
YOUNG WOMEN’S LIVES GROUP
This dynamic, 8-session program empowers young women to overcome challenges using strength, personal experience, and creativity. The sessions will create an environment that will help nurture self-confidence in young women.
MAKE YOU THINK WORKSHOP
This series of workshops is about the values that make us tick: respect, perseverance, honesty and purpose.
ANTI-THEFT WORKSHOP
Designed for youth who have been arrested for shoplifting, this 1-hour workshop educates participants about the wide-reaching impact of theft on our community. Youth learn about the consequences of having a criminal record, and explore the new technology that makes it difficult for people to steal. The program also provides alternatives for young people to dealing with high risk situations.
SUBSTANCE AWARENESS WORKSHOP
The Substance Awareness Workshop aims to give youth the facts about drugs and their effects on people’s lives in a non-judgmental manner: How do drugs affect my body? How can drugs influence my social life? Who is affected by my use of drugs? How do I stay safe? The facilitator will also discuss the legal consequences to using drugs and explore the risk factors that lead to use.
IMPACT OF CRIME WORKSHOP
Ever wonder how your actions affect the community? Through a series of interactive assignments, the Impact of Crime Workshop helps young men and women take ownership of their actions, thanks in part to greater awareness of the world around them.
